The Shepherdstown Police Department is a full-service police department and exists for the purpose of providing an enhanced level of safety in our community, protecting the rights guaranteed to all people by the Constitution, and improving the quality of life for each citizen. The Department works in partnership with the citizens to maintain a safe community with problem solving initiatives. The Shepherdstown Police Department serves a population of about 800 residents as well as the university population around town. The department currently has six full-time officers, four part-time officers, two part-time parking enforcement officers and one administrative clerk.

Our Police protect and serve the citizens of Shepherdstown on a 24-hour basis. This is offered through mutual cooperative agreements with the Shepherdstown Police Department working jointly with all municipal police departments in Jefferson County, Shepherd University Police, and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. This allows the Police Department to assist outside the boundaries of the Town when necessary, and vice versa. Community Policing is a high priority for the officers of the Shepherdstown Police Department.

Parking enforcement within Shepherdstown falls under the responsibilities and authority of the Police Department. Residential street parking is by permit only.
